Jamdani, and the hands that finish it.

Woven sarees from the looms of Narayanganj, finished in our Dhanmondi studio with hand sequin and karchupi work. Pret, couture and bridal.

A DRESS ME bridal saree, styled with traditional gold jewellery

A weave with no shortcut in it

Jamdani is not printed. Two weavers sit at one loom facing each other, lift the warp by hand and lay in a thicker thread for every motif, working from memory with no pattern card and no machine.

A dense saree moves forward about an inch a day. What comes off the loom then goes to our karchupi table, where sequins, beads and zari are set by hand along the border and the aanchal.

From yarn to the fold in your hand

  1. Winding the yarn

Fine yarn is starched with rice water, dried in shade and wound onto bobbins. Starch is what lets a thread hold a motif.

  2. Dressing the loom

Thousands of warp threads are drawn through the reed by hand. A mistake here shows up in the cloth months later.

  3. Lifting the motifs

Two weavers push thicker thread through counted warp with a bamboo needle, motif by motif. This is the Jamdani part.

  4. Karchupi and finishing

In Dhanmondi the saree is stretched on a frame for sequin and zari work, then washed, pressed and folded.
